Additional Resources

A colleague of mine in my part time job has completed a foundation degree in media studies, i took this as an opportunity to ask her opinion on how we were doing as a group and the ideas we have. i spoke to her about my role of director, i discussed with her the band and what we aim to represent them as.

We were lucky as mt colleague still had her portfolio that she completed whilst at university, i have looked through and found examples of risk assessment forms, storyboards additional planning etc although we are not working at university level my group and i have decided we should try our best to get up to that standard of work in the planning stages although our experience on technical aspects may be lower than university standard we aim to produce the best we can.

My colleague has also offered to be present at the shoot not to do it for us but to give us constructive criticism and help us organise equipment etc. however as a group we have not decided whether this is a good idea or not.

I have been able to show this portfolio to one of my group members Lucy as she also works part time in the same area as me so showed her once i had finished work, i plan to show the rest of the group very soon in our next meeting or lesson.

Band Research- Black Stone Cherry

Another band that is similar in style to The Vees is black stone cherry although they have one less band member i still see them as relevant when looking at other bands for ideas. They also still do have 3 guitarists because the lead vocalist also plays guitar so the same instruments are used than the vees.

At the beginning of this video they also do the same as Shinedown in having close up shots of equipment and the band preparing to play, the setting is also quite derelict one setting i would like to replicate best i can if agreed by the band and the rest of my team as i feel it would work well with the song.

Another part of the video i would like to point out is the costume given to the band members, simplistic alternative look that the band said they would also want, the costume also shows the different aspects of the bands personalities and their individual style.

Although the lighting here is quite simplistic i do like the purpose light glare as it works as a transition from one shot to another and flows with the music well, the camera time is also shared very well there is more focus on the lead singer but not too much a balance i wish to replicate as i aim to promote the whole band not just one member.

Band Research- Shinedown

As Director i decided to look at other bands that are similar to The Vees, Shinedown an indie/rock band founded in 2001 are similar in there band members they also consists of 5 members. i looked at a few of the bands videos and found similarities that might help us in our project.

The setting in most of the videos the setting seems to commonly be derelict houses or buildings, this is also quite common in indie music videos, a derelict setting i think would be affective in the song we have been given the song is about a break up which reflects the old and abandoned love of the couple.

Another aspect of the Shinedown videos i wish to bring forward as an idea for our music video is the first shots they use of the band preparing for their performance this would include close ups of the instruments and other equipment such as amps, i find these shots affective when promoting a band on their first video.

New Band Member

When we first met the band they had recently lost a band member the drummer, they reassured us that they were auditioning for new ones, after checking their website i found that they have now got a new drummer. The age range in the band is good as the new drummer is quite young it could open up their target audience to younger people even more than it used to.

The band now consists of 5 members, 2 guitar, 1 bass, 1 vocals and now 1 drummer, i now am going to research into similar bands in members and genre and look at their videos logo etc.

I have also contacted the rest of my group via facebook to notify them of the change in case the band themselves do not contact us to let us know. A copy of my message is below.

heyyy again just to let you know in case the band didnt they have now got a new drummer he looks younger than the rest which i think will open the target auidience up more to the younger generation.

Research into narrative

We knew from the beginning of the project we wanted to include a narrative storyline to make the video an amplification video. We saw it necessary to research into other music videos that also do this to get an idea of how to construct ours.

One example that is a good example of the storyline i have been drafting for the video is Beyonce- If i were a boy, it is good in that it reflects they lyrics of the song which can be verified an an effective tool by applying to Goodwins theory of music videos. The video tells of the breakdown of the relationship between a couple however it is quite unconventional as the woman is the one in the full time job and cheating on her partner though we do later find out this is the reverse of the real situation hence the title of the song if i were a boy.

The affects in this video is also an convention i wish to replicate the use of black and white i feel is very effective in showing the emotion of the song the use of fades as shot transitions is also something i feel makes  it work as a narrative within the video showing past tense and keeping to the rhythm of the song and although theirr is dialogue at the beginning throughout the film there isn't any to explain what is happening however by the cinematography we are able to understand what is happening without dialogue of text.

Previous Work

In past projects i have also been director i find this role enjoyable and the best way to demonstate my skills in production. My last preliminary task was to create a video that cut to the beat, my group agreed on doing this to Dido's- This land is mine, i was also director ad also helped within the editing stage. For this project i was responsible for storyboard's and chose the majority of camera work and setting etc.

What i learnt
i learnt time management was vital especially for director as without storyboards the shoot cannot go on, although i did leave it till late to completely finish i did know what i wanted to achieve, however the group needed a paper to understand how the narrative was to be shot.

How this video influences the main project
For this video as shown there is a performance and a small narrative i enjoyed having this as i feel it breaks up the video and does not bore the auidience,it also shows the different side of the performer, this will be one of my suggestions for our main video as it is a good method to promote the band.

Initial Ideas

Firstly i thought of the feedback from the band about what they thought of the song and what could work well, we discussed about filming outside thinking of this i looked at Paramore- Decode another music video which is set outside in a forest although the song has a different meaning it is again indie/rock and i thought it would be useful to look at other factors such as lighting and equipment used by the band such as amps etc.

Initial idea for a video outside
My first idea was set in a forest with two people (the couple breaking up), and use a lot of quick shots of the man and woman running in confusion trying to find their partner in the forest. The band would also feature performing in a wide space, very similar to Paramore’s Decode where a lot of swooping camera work is used  especially at 0.27 seconds that is a very good example of the type of camera work i thought would be ideal to show the distance between the couple. Although this video is also for a film the camera work of the band is still very well done and focused. One key feature i will take away from this video and consider is the lighting of the main singer Hayley Williams at 1.25 it is affective yet soft.

Results from meeting with the band

After speaking with the band member we found that their target audience is very broad because of their music and because of where they play which is a pub setting that can have from 18 year old people to 60 and 70 year old people, they are not gender specific in their target.
After asking about what bands influence them Tim told us that they do not base themselves on another band they like to be individual in their style. The genre they would base themselves in was indie/rock similar to what I interpreted it to be with covers on their website like Greenday etc.
The band are very happy with their logo however they have allowed us to upgrade it best we can to a newer style that we feel would help their promotion.
When asked about the type of video they would like Tim liked the thought of a narrative along with performance which I would class as a amplification video, I then went on to ask what the song is about to start and get an idea for the narrative, Tim’s interpretation of the song was a break up of a couple I also asked would he want the video more fun or very serious, he said that a more fun video would suit what the band are about more.
The song we are making a video for is called “Don’t matter” after being told this I accessed the song through the bands website the song is 4min 13sec just above average for a song, the song is quite upbeat and has a good rhythm to work with.
We also asked about what setting the band was thinking of for the video their initial idea is outside in open space, the costume would fit the genre of a more alternative style of costume i.e. jeans and smart top which again is open to a massive target audience.
We then asked would the band want a lot of affects in the video to make it flashier and high quality in terms of technology however Tim’s view that a few affects would be good but simplicity would work.
Filming
As a group we discussed what dates we would be available to film in January we came to a conclusion to around early January however producer Beth then emailed the band the date and we were told they would not be able to make the dates we suggested. The dates the band sent back were after our internal deadline for filming, them myself and Lucy spoke to Mr Sheppard our media teacher and told him the situation we have been given an extension because the date was change by the band not ourselves although this is cutting in fine we all agreed it is achievable.
The Band
The band my group and i have been assigned  is “the Vees”. The Vees have 4/5 members they are currently auditioning new drummers for the band after the current member transferred. At first glance without meeting the band they seem more of the Indie style yet cover all genres of songs. One of the questions i wish to ask them would be which genre would they place themselves and their music and do they differ.
Assigning Roles
As a group we decided the following roles were best for everyone to be placed in to demonstrate their skills efficiently
Producer-Bethany Wilkins
Director- Sarah Matthews
Technical- Lucy Rosbrook
Designer- Helen Pearman
Meeting a Band member
Before meeting the band member we each complied a list of questions to ask him to establish their style and their thoughts of what we should create for their video along with, target audience etc.
Questions
1.       Who would you say your target audience is?
2.       What bands have influenced you most?
3.       What music genre would you class yourselves in?
4.       Would you want us to change the logo?
5.       What kind of music video would you like, in terms of narrative and performance?
6.       What is the song called?
7.       What is the song about?
8.       Where would you like it to be set?
9.       What sort of costume would you like?
10.   Would you like a lot of affects used in your video?
11.   Where you looking for a simplistic video or more complex?
